On August 2nd, 2017, was my son Marc’s on his first day of camp and he was found unresponsive in the bottom of the pool. Miracle Marc is a film that addresses the importance of water safety and that miracles can and do happen. Our family is so lucky to have my son Marc with us, many families are not so lucky. I
am one of the fortunate ones.
Imagine your worst fear coming true. Your child lying in a hospital bed fighting for his life. What do you do?. What do you say? How can you help him? How do you turn your pain into a movement? For the first time as a parent, I felt powerless. I could not save my child. I only prayed with all my heart for a miracle.
The fact, that Marc is with us after being underwater for 4 minutes and able to function is a testimony of his strength, our family’s love and the power of the higher power. We feel Marc is here for a purpose. Did you know that Drowning is the 3rd leading cause of unintentional injury death worldwide, accounting for 7% of all injury-related deaths? There are an estimated 360, 000 annual drowning deaths worldwide.
Global estimates may vary significantly. However, many underestimate the actual public health problem related to drowning. Children, males and individuals with increased access to water are most at risk of drowning. In the United States, drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury death in children aged 1–14 years. I did not know these facts either. Until “it” happened to my son.
I felt that we do not discuss this issue much. The city is turning our pools into concrete sprinklers and as a result, our inner city children are less likely to learn how to swim. We as a community can change that. Do you know how to swim? Do your children swim? Do you know someone who cannot swim?
With this film, we hope to launch The Miracle Marc Foundation. Our Mission for the foundation is to raise awareness about pool safety, provide support to families to access swimming lessons, and most importantly, advocate for change of legislation and policy. Our mandate will be that, “the rates in child drowning decrease in the next decade.” We can do this! It starts at home in our community.
